... חזנות מקורית במינה, מקורית במהותה, מזרחיודאירופית,
שנקראה בשם "חזנות פולנית" הכריעה את הכף במאבקה נגד
החזנות האשכנזית של ימי־הבינים, שההשפעה המזרחית הלכה בה
ופחתה מפני ההשפעה האירופית־מערבית, והיסוד השמי־מזרחי
נצטמצם בה מאד. החזנות הפולנית עומדת ברובה על חופש
ה״ריתול" הרצ׳יטטיבי ללא כל הכנה קודמת, והתחילה מתפשטת
גם מחוץ לגבולותיה בכל אירופה, ובמאה הי״ח הספיקה להכות
שרשים עמוקים גם בקרב יהודי גרמניה וחזני המערב, חזנות זו
המיוחדת במינה שהתבלטה בסימנים ברורים ובקוים אסיניים, באה
לעורר התפעלות והתעלות לעולם האצילות ולמלא תפקיד לאומי
ומוסרי־דתי. הרצ׳יטטיב האימפרוביזטורי תפס בה מקום בראש,
וכוח דמיונו של החזן־האמן מילא בה תפקיד נעלה, בפתחו לפי
