'אצלו גם בימי שבתו ת או בימות החול, כי היה מפורסם כצדיק
וחסיד מופלא, ובילו אצלו בתורה ועבודה, כי היה בר־אוריין
ודברי תורתו הוכיחו גם פקחות מרובה. תמיד נמצאו אצלו חסידים
מערי־השדה, מהם שהיו שרים ניגונים מחצרות שונים. ביחוד רב
היה מספרם בימים הנוראים, שאז תפוסים היו כל המקומות בבית
.המדרש, ורבים היו שעמדו בתפילה בחוץ, על הדשא ובשדה הפתוח
שליד הבית.
הרבי היה עובר בימים־הנוראים לפני התיבה רק בתפילת
נעילה בלבד. מרעים בתפילתו ומטיל אימה על שומעיו, ואילו בניו
היו מתפללים מוספים, פעם ר' יוסף ופעם ר׳ יצחק־מנדל. פסוקי־
דזמרא בימים הנוראים נחשבו לחזקה לר׳ חיים נונברג מחסידיו.
ברם, הרבּי היה מקבל פעמים רבות את פני שבת המלכה. הנעימות
האדמו״ריות המסורתיות שהיו שגורות בפיו הוסיפו על הקדושה
ויראת הרוממות ששררו בבית. לפעמים היה עובר לפני התיבה
במוספים בימים־הנוראים בבית־המדרש העירוני לפי בקשת הגבאים
ופרנסי העיר. מנהגו היה לקדש בליל שבת בחורף בשעה 7,
בקיץ — בשעה 3 בבוקר החלה התפילה בשעה 9 ונמשכה עד
12—1. בראש־השנה נמשכה התפילה עד 5 בערב, ומיד עם גמר
