אזני קולטות צחוק הכסף של פרחי הצבעונין החיים המפזזים
מסביב. ואני יודע — כל הגבעות האלו סביב, כל העמק הזה הירוק,
הרענן נוצרו למענם, למען ילדי ישראל שיבואו וימלאום צחוק
זך, שירת צפרים מצלצלת. — ופתאום תבוא עלי כעין מהלומה,
מתוך תוכי תבוא, תהלמגי, ילדי ישראל נחנקים בקרונות המות, —
ילדתי הקטנה אשר חפזה סביבי, אשר תצה לגלות כפעם בפעם
פרח חדש ומופלא, דומה ביותר לאחותי הצעירה שהשארתי ה שם
בגולה לפני עשרות בשנים, היא דומה אליה מאוד. אותם הפנים
הסגלגלים, אותם הפנים של אחותי הקטנה מאז. ביום שש אח ר
הצהרים היתה משפשפת לי את הערדלים. היא גדלה שם. לא היא
מפזזת כאן מסביבי על הגבעה שטופת־השמש והצהלה. היא גדלה
