... In 1919, soon after the end of World War I, the first
Jewish Art Exposition took place in Bialystok. Poland
was then independent, and the Jewish population, par-
ticularly the young, was gripped by nationalistic fervor.
Various art clubs were founded, and a number of tal-
ented artists and singers emerged. Jewish life was filled
