The transports began

The book records a first transport to Chełmno from Radegast station on 16 January 1942 and a final transport numbered 80 on 2 April 1942. A letter remembered by Rabbi Silman reported that people were being killed at Chełmno, giving the transports a deadly meaning within the testimony. Murder and evacuation

The memorial book reports that approximately 8,000 people, probably whole families, were secretly murdered and disappeared from the ghetto. It also records mass killing at Chełmno in June and July 1944 and the beginning of ghetto evacuation on 8 August 1944. Defiance in the ghetto

Resistance included demonstrations against Rumkowski’s administration, a September 1940 tailors’ strike, and children’s collective protest over a withheld lunch. These episodes show that coercion did not eliminate disagreement, solidarity, or the capacity to act together. Hiding and rescue

Jakub Pazuanski, his wife, and daughter hid for ten weeks at Papir Resort, while Dr. Weisskopf hid in a bunker and attacked ghetto commandant Hans Bibow with his bare hands. The book also recalls efforts to save orphan children from deportation to the Chełmno gas chambers.
