ב־25 מאי 1898. החרדים הגישו מחאה נגד בחירה זו.
בין החותמים על המחאה היו נחום בורשטין, מנדל
מרגושס, ליזר גוטוירט ואחרים. הנציבות דחתה את
המחאה. ב~1 לינואר 1898 נערך טכס השבעת שלשת
הרבנים של הקהלה: הרב ר׳ יצחק שמלקיש, הרב
