אחרי הרצחו של ד״ר פרנס. נסיונות קשים נתנסה
בקיימו מגע עם השלטונות הנאציים, כנציגם של יהודי
לבוב. אף שהצליח לא אחת להחלץ מן המיצר׳בפקחותו
מרצו וכשרונו, ידע שקצו מתקרב והולך. "חבל אני
שוזר מסביב לצווארי״ — היה אומר מדי פעם, בחזרו
חיוור, נוגה ומעוצבן, מן ה״ראיונות" התכופים אצל
השלטונות הנאציים. בימיו האחרונים עסק בקדחתנות
באיסוף ספרים לספריתו. מת מיתה טבעית "בהסד
אלוהים״: השבץ אחזהו ומת באביב 1942.
