... ומחוסרי־חסות. חייהם היו סכנת־נפשות מתמדת
החורבות היו ריקות וחשופות, אך למרות זאת התכבדו
מדי פעם בביקורי הבלשים האוקראיניים או סתם
גזלנים וסחטנים, אשר חיפשו אחרי יהודים מסתתרים,
אחרי חפצי־ערך שנותרו אחרי ההרג, ואחרי אוצרות־
קורח מדומים, שלפי האגדות המהלכות בעם, טמנום
היהודים לפני מותם במרתפים ומתחת־לאדמה. במצוא
המחפשים יהודים חיים המסתתרים בין החרבות,
״עכברים״ — איימו עליהם וסחטו מהם דמי־שתיקה,
את שארית רכושם, ולעתים מסרום לבולשת גם אחרי
התשלום. חיים אלה נמאסו על הד״ר גינסברג, והוא
שלח יד בנפשו. יש לשער כי רבו מעשי ההתאבדות
