במתקיפים האדוקים תמכו חוכרי־המסים, שהתנגדו לרב כהן על סירובו להשביע את העבריינים על הוראות מס־יהנרות ומס בשר־כשר. אחדים מראשי האדוקים היו חוכרי־מסים בעצמם וקל היה להם להסית את המוניהם נגד הנהלת הקהילה והרב כהן. אולם כל מאמציהם לסלק את הר׳ כהן היו לשווא והממשלה דחתה את הפטיציה. אז ניסו נציגי האדוקים לרכוש את תמיכת הפולנים בדרישותיהם והעלו במועצה הלאומית את שאלת הרב כהן, בנימוק שאינו יליד גליציה וטענו "אנחנו רוצים רב פולני". הם ביקשו גם את ציר הפרלמנט, הרוזן אלקס בורקבסקי, להשתדל שבחירת הרב תערך בלי התערבות הממשלה, ...Connected nodes
