בכמה פעולות מוצלחות בבורסה התעשר עושר רב.
בחייו הפרטיים היה קמצן מובהק. הוא קימץ לגבי
משפחתו, אך היה מפזר את הונו לטובת מוסדות־
הצדקה, מטבחים עממיים, בתי־מחסה, מרפאות וקופות
גמילות־חסדים. ויחד עם זה סרב לתת נדבה לעני
ברחוב. בזמן מלחמת העולם הראשונה עמד בראש
"ועד ההצלה היהודי". בגלל פעילותו הפילנטרופית
נתכבּד בתואר "יועץ־קיסר־". לאחר מותו הוריש את
כל רכושו לטובת מוסדות־צדקה, בעוד שאשתו ובנו
