זמן רב היה השלטון בידי המשכילים. והנה
התאמצו החסידים להוציאו מידיהם. ראו המשכילים
כי רוב ההמון נוטה אחרי ר׳ שמעון סופר והצדיק
מבלז, עמדו ושינו את תקנות־הקָהלה כדי להחזיק את
השלטון בידם. אבל הדבר לא הועיל. החסידים ניצחו
בבחירות. המשכילים מצאו פגם בבחירות ופסלון,
והמלחמה החלה מחדש והמשכילים ניצחו בהשפעת
קונטרסים שהכילו סאטירות עוקצניות שחוברו בידי
צעיר משכיל חבר באגודת "שומר ישראל". כשלון
