הפקידים, מור י בתי־הספר וגם קציני־הצבא היו
מלמדים את המשכילים ברצון ומספקים להם חומר־
קריאה מן הספרות הגרמנית. גם בוגרי בתי־הספר
והאוניברסיטה תרמו הרבה להפצת ההשכלה והשפיעו
על הנוער מבתי אמידים להסתגל למבהגי־אירופה,
וייחוד להסיר את התלבושת המסורתית ולהחליפה
בבגדים לפי מנהג האשכנזים. מטעם זה זכו המשכילים
בגליציה לכינוי "דייטשן" (אשכנזים). שינוי הלבוש
הסעיר את היהודים האדוקים, שהרי ידוע כמה נלחמו
היהודים בגליציה נגד תקנות שנת 1789, שלפיהן הוטל
עליהם, פרט לרבנים, להתלבש החל משנת 1795 כמנהג
הגויים, שרק בהשתדלות נציגיהם אצל הקיסר
ליאופולד השני, הצליחו לבטלן. ...
