אלכסנדר הכהן, תלמידו של הרמ״א והמהרש״ל,
התחתן עם בת ר׳ ישראל פרנס בלבוב שיחדלו בית
גדול ולמד שם עם רבנים גאונים, שהיי סמוכים על
׳שולחנו. נתמנה לרב בלודמיר וחזר ללבוב בתור ריש־
מתיבתא, מתלמידיו היו ר׳ יהושע בעל "מגיני שלמה",
ר׳ אברהם שרנצל בעל ,איתן האזרחי", ר׳ ישעי׳
הלוי איש הורוויץ בעל השל״ה ועוד. בשמו נתפרסמו
הרבה תקנות ועד ארבע־ארצות, עשרים וחמש שנה
הקדיש לחבור ספריו הגדול־ם הסמ״ע ("ספר מאירת
עינים") וס׳ "דרישה ופרישה" על ארבעה־טורים.
׳חיבר עוד ספרים, מהם נשרפו ומהם שנשארו בכת״י.
