... בניית בתי־הכנסת בפולין בימי הפיאסטים היתה
בלתי מוגבלת. אסור היה רק שבית־כנסת יהיה מפואר
בחיצוניותו ושונה בגדלו מיתר הבתים. הכנסיה
והסינודים השתדלו להגביל את חופש הבביה רכך
החליט הסינוד בפיוטרקוב בשנת 1542 בראשותו של
שונא־ישראל הידוע פיוטר גאמראט, שהמלך לא יתיר
להקים בתי־כנסת חדשים אלא רק לתקן את בתי־
הכנסת הישנים בלבד 4). תקנה זו הוחמרה עוד בסיגוד
בגניזנו בשנת 1589 ע״י החלטה־מחאה נגד בתי־הכנסת
המפוארים שהיהודים הקימו בערים המלכותיות, וכי על
