... אלמלי, הפולנים מלאו שמחה בחשבם שהנה בא
גואלם. בשנים 1806 — 1807 ציפו הפולנים בכל פולין
באוירת תקוה, והחלו לארגן צבא פולני. והנה נודע
כי הצרפתים מתקרבים. פתאום החלו גייסות פרוסיה
לעזוב את החבל ואחריהם באו הצרפתים שנתקבלו
בשמחה מצד האוכלוסיה כולה. באותו זמן התקימה
בטילזיט ועידת השלום, ולפי סעיף תשיעי של החוזה,
שנחתם ב־7 ליולי 1807 נמסר כל חבל ליטא לרוסיה
כדי ליצור גבול טבעי בין נסיכות וארשה וממלכת
רוסיה. וכה נועדה ליטא, אחרי 12 שנות כיבוש פרוסי
