השוק מול הכנסיה הרוסית. להבות־אש אפפו רחוב
שלם. שורה שלמה של בתים נשרפו כליל. מכבי־האש
עבדו במרץ ובמסירות. וסכנו את חייהם, עם הציוד
הצנוע שעמד לרשותם. את המים הביאו מן הבאר,
המרוחק ממקום הדליקה. לא היו למכבים מכונות אלא
סוסים ועגלות עמוסות חביות. מי יודע כמה רחובות
היו עולים באש, לולא מסירותם של מכבי־אש שהשתלטו
