... במרחק עשרות מטרים מבית־המדרש החדש, עמד
בית־המדרש העתיק שקראו לו "דער אלטער בית
המדרש". בבית־המדרש הישן התפללו סנדלרים, חייטים,
בעלי מלאכות, ופועלים מכל הסוגים. ורב העיר, הרב
שוסטער, היה בין המתפללים בבית־המדרש הישן. וגם
למד שיעור במשניות, וגם ר׳ קופיל דער שוסטער שהיה
בין יודעי תורה וקבלה. למד את המתפללים משנה, עין־
יעקב ועוד. הוא היה סנדלר, אבל מימיו לא עשה זוג
