זה היה בין הזמנים, לפני התחלת הלימודים בחדר
לשנה חדשה. החלטנו לסדר משמרת לילה. לשבת כל
הלילה בבית־המדרש החדש ללימוד ולחזור על כל מה
שלמדנו, כי ככה היה נהוג מתמיד. אבל אחר זמן קצר
בלימודים בדפי גמרא, בקשנו קצת חופש, כי מי
יפריע לנו באמצע הלילה, כולם ישנים, ועשינו קצת
סדר בבית־המדרש. העברנו את השולחנות שעמדו
בסוף לאמצע והספסלים שעמדו באמצע לסוף, ויצאנו
קצת לטייל בחוץ בחושך. נכנסנו בפדול, שכונת העניים
