בפרוץ המלחמה ועם התקרבות הגייסות הנאציים, עזבו רוב
הגברים את העיר, וחברי הקיבוץ בכללם. הבורחים לא הרחיקו
לכת, כי הדרכים המשובשות, הפצצות הגרמנים וההתנכלויות של
הפולנים והפולקס־דויטשה אילצו רבים לחזור. הצבא הגרמני הממוכן
הקדים את גלי הפליטים ועקפם. התחילה הדרך רבת־התלאות חזרה.
