ביהודי ירא שמים, ספק לצבא הצארי, כדרך סוחרים רבים
בשנים ההן. כבר מימי ילדותו הצטיין בלימודיו, ובהיותו בחור צעיר
יצאו לו מוניטין כעלוי. בגלל שכלו החריף ונטייתו לשקוד על
התורה הוחלט במשפחה לאפשר לו להיות למורה ודיין בישראל,
לפי שנטה לכך. טרם מלאו לו עשרים שנה קיבל היתר הוראה
