ואמנם הכל מיהרו להירשם. ראשית, משום שזוהי תקנה
גרמנית, ושנית — כדי לקבל את כרטיסי־הלחם. אולם ב״ועד־
הקהילה", כשהוא לעצמו, היו מזלזלים. לשעבר, בזמנים כתיקונם,
היו היהודים נלחמים אלה באלה מלחמה עזה על עסקי ה״גמינה"
(הקהילה). כל מפלגה היתה, שואפת להושיב שם מספר מרובה
ביותר של אנשיה, והמפלגה שזכתה לרוב יכלה למנות גם רב
ושוחט וכל כיוצא באלה, משל עצמה. בבחירות לגמינה יש שהגיעו
הדברים עד לידי שפיכת־דמים, אבל כל זה היה לשעבר. עכשיו
אין לבו של אדם פנוי לכל הדברים האלה, הנראים דחוקים כל־כך,
פחותי־ערך. משל לאדם בוגר, שנזכר במעשי־נערותו שלו. ...Connected nodes
