1941. קרונות־בקר, שחלונותיהם מסורגים, ובכל קרון דחוסים
600 איש. הרכבת משרכת דרכה ממחנה הריכוז פינף־טייכאן לכיוון
בלתי־ידוע. האנשים תשושים ועייפים. זה ימים לא בא אוכל לפיהם.
אפילו מים לא קיבלו דיים. והנה עצרנו בתחנה ששקקה חיילים
גרמנים. הם, והאזרחים בתחנה, מעיפים מבטי־לעג ובוז בכיוון
לרכבת־המוות. אל הקרון שלנו מתקרבת קבוצת גנרלים וקצינים
בכירים בשנות העמידה. שואל אחד מהם בגרמנית רהוטה: "לאן
פניכם מועדות, אנשי פלוגודהסבו ך י צחו ק פרו ע רוו י תאוות ־
רצח מהדהד בחלל התחנה, ודמנו נקרש בעורקינו. שני זורק דרך
הלון של קרון פרוסת־לחם, שהפכה את קרון־האומללים שדה־
מערכה. כל אחד רצה לזכות בפרוסה. קולות היללה, שהגיעו לאוזניהם
