סאניה הפנתה את פניה, והנה אחורי גבה עומד "הבחור"
בשתי עיניו הקטנות, הליצניות. הוא שלח שלה על אוזנה את
הפסוק, ומיד רץ ממנה והלאה וגליון נייר בידו, כדי לגמור, כנראה,
עניין דחוף. ביציאתו מן האולם הרועש, כשהוא נדחק בתוך ההמץ
הצפוף, הסב "הבחור" עוד פעם את ראשו אל סאניה וחיוך בעיניו,
חיוך המביע חכמה ודרך־ארץ, רגש צער והוקרה לאותו אדם,
ששמו סאניה שמידט. סאניה השיבה לו בחיוך נוגה, אילם, והרהרה
