... Bialystok had lost 60,000 Jews and, counting the
provinces, 200,000 Jews. A few hundred survivors who
returned after the war gathered in the Great Synagogue
on the Sabbath, August 23, 1944, to commemorate the
dead. The chief cantor of Warsaw led the services. As
he chanted the memorial prayer, the entire congrega-
