במשך שנים אלה החלה להתעצב דמותו של חײם, הוא הפך
מילד לנער. הוא התפתח בגופו, גבה ורחב ובתוכו החל לפעם
לב חם. חביב היה הילד על כל חברױ. תמיד עזר כשחױך
מלוה את כל מעשױ. הוא היה ספורטאי מעולה — תכונה
שחבבה אותו על כולם. בשעות הפנאי היה נהלץ לעזרת
הורױ. שעות רבות היה ױשב בקױםק שליד שפת הים ונושא
בעול העבודה. זכור מקרה בו באו ילדים רכים לקױסק ובקשו
דברי מתיקה וכםף אין להם. חײם ידע שמשפחתו מתפרנסת
בקושי, אך עובדה זו לא מנעה מעדינותו וטוב לבו לתת
לילדים את מבוקשם תוך טענה שישלמו מאוחר יותר. והנער
