הפעילות הצױנית הראשונית בחמילניק התחילה עוד בחיױ של ד״ר הרצל ז״ל, עם התחלת תקופת ה״צױנות המדינית״. בתקופה זו׳ בימי שלטון הצאר בפולין, היתה הצױנות אסורה. הפעילות הצױנית הר״בטאה בפעולות חשאױת מאחורי גבה של המשטרה הרוםית״ בעיקר בבתים פרטײם, תוך הםוװ״ה. לאחד הבתים האלה שימשה דירתו של העםקן משה בורנשטײן (כעת באמריקה). מאחורי חנות המנפקטורה שלו היה חדר צר׳ בלתי נראה לעין׳ ושם הײנו נאםפים לישיבות, הרצאות ולפעו־ לות אחרות, שהתבטאו במכירת שקלים לקונגרסים צױגײם, התרמה ואםוף כספים לקרן הקײמת לישראל׳ הפצת עתונים צױנים ורכישת חברים לרעױן הצױני. בורנשטײן היה איש משכיל׳ בן לאב משכיל׳ ױצא גליציה — שהתכתב עם נחום םוקולוב והשתהף בפועל בעתון ״המליץ״. ...
