A self-organized community

The memorial book describes David-Horodok as an organized Jewish settlement and says that its community became independent under tsarist rule. It also records a town administration elected every three years before Russian rule, showing that communal organization included civic as well as religious structures. Religious institutions and practice

The town had five houses of study, including one associated with Hasidim, and a community-supervised Chevra Kadisha with hereditary membership. Accounts of the Staliner shtibl, Sabbath life, and Passover prayer show religion as both institutional practice and shared communal culture. Education, reading, and culture

Before 1905, a library for children and school youth was organized at S. Zagarodsky’s, and a reformed heder operated under teacher Barentshuk. The Tarbut school later became a source of communal pride; more than one hundred graduates continued in cultural institutions, including gymnasiums and seminaries.
