המונח ,קהילה"* משמעו היה שלטון עצמי, מוכר על-ידי הממשלה, ומוסר לידי הישוב שליטה
גמורה בעניני דת וחינוך, להסדירם ברוחו וכרצונו. שלטון כגון זה לא היה תופעה חדשה בחיי-
הציבור היהודיים, בכל שנות גלותם נהנו היהודים מעצמאות מסוימת בשטח הדת, החינוך וכדומה,
אם כי לא תמיד היתה לעצמאות זו אותה המשמעות, ולא תמיד היתה מושתתת על אותם יסודות.
בפולין זכו הקהילות לתשומת לבם המיוחדת של מלכי פולין, שהעניקו להן, ע*י מינשרים מיוחדים,
זכויות רחבות, אשר שימשו בסיס נרחב להתפתחותן. הקהילה ייצגה את העם בפני השלטון המרכזי,
והיתה רשאית להטיל מסים, ולהקים בתי דין ומשפט, וכל אלה העניקו כוח ועצמה לשלטונות.
סדרי השלטון הללו, הטביעו את חותמם על האוכלוסיה, ועיצבו את דפוסי החיים החברתיים. ...Connected nodes
