הלך בעצת אשתו להתחבא מבית-הכנסת, ומצא שם עוד 4--5 יהודים וביניהם ר' דויד'ל, שעמד
בתפילה. כשהאיר הבוקר תמה ר' דויד'ל שאין באים להתפלל. סח לו ברוך את המתרחש בעיר
והוסיף כי אין לקוות למנין. תוך כדי כך נכנסו שלושה חיילים לבית-הכנסת ודרשו כסף. לברוך
בלבד היו 300 רו"כ בכיסו. החיילים לקחו את הכסף ולא נגעו בהם. כששאלו ר' דויד כיצד העז
להחזיק כסף בחג השיב ברוך: ,הכינותי כופר נפש". משהלך ר' דויד'ל לביתו, עטוף בטלית.
תפסוהו הבלחובצים ברחוב ופקדו עליו לרקוד לפניהם אם רוצה הוא בטליתו. נענה להם
ר' דויד'ל --- וכיון לכבוד שמחת-תורה. בימי הבלחובצים נרצחו שמריהו שרמוק, חנה -- אשת
יוסף ברודר, והצעירה רושקה בת דוב מורבצ'יק. הרוגים רבים יותר היו בכפרים, שם אירעו גם
מקרי-אונס. בחובורסק תלו את יוסף במגבת על משקוף הדלת. דברים דומים קרו גם במלישוב
