מלקטים גרגרים. לעת ערב אנו חוזרים. המעברה מלאה אדם. הגויות מספרות זו עם זו, אגב
משיכה בחבל להסעת המעברה. גם אני נותנת ידי ומושכת בחבל בכל כחי. אני בקצה המעברה.
לפתע נשמטת הקרקע מתחת לרגלי, תלויה בשתי ידי על החבל על-פני המים, והמעברה חמקה --
עברה לה ממני והלאה. החבל יורד ויורד, הסכנה קרובה. והנה הבחינה בי אחת האיכרות. הגויות
התחילו להצטלב וברעש והמולה שבה המעברה ונתקרבה אלי. ניצלתי. אמא היתה נרעשת מאוד,
