תמיד והמלמדים אף פעם לא הכריזו שביתה על הלנת שכרם. ״וכולם היו נזהרים בבני
עניים שמהם תצא תורה.
ב״חוק״, בית מדרש ע״ש חוק לישראל, שלמדו שמה מדי יום־ביומו, התקיימה הישיבה
העירונית, שמה למדו כבר התלמידים מכל חוגי התושבים, גם אלה שגמרו את התלמוד־
תורה ובין אלה שהיו בעלי אמצעים ולמדו מקודם אצל מלמדים פרטיים, דרך המלמדים,
ר׳ װעלװיל ור׳ בן־ציון ועוד, שלימדו בישיבה זו, עברו כל הנוער העירוני ואת דרך
לימודיהם הראשונה עוצבה במקום זה. המנהיג הרוחני ורוח החיים של הישיבה היה
