את תפקיד הכלכלי של היהודים ידע להעריך
יאן סובייסקי יורשו של המלך וישניוביצקי, שנפטר
בלבוב ב־10 בנובמבר 1673. בנעוריו הכיר את היהודים,
בעיר מולדתו זולקוב, וידע מה גדולה חשיבותם
למשק־המדינה ולכן נקט קו נוח לאוכלוסיה היהודית
ועזר להם לשפר את מצבם. בחצרו בזולקוב היו
יהודים רבים, ובאמון מיוחד התיחס אל האדמיניסטרטור
והמוכסן שלו יעקב־בצלאל בן נתן, שהשתקע בשנת
1685 בזולקוב, וניהל את תחנת־המכס בלבוב 3).
