מוצאו מיארוסלב, ממשפחת עניים, ובקושי רב הצליח להתפרנס בימי לימודיו בגימנס־ה. ואף אחרי גמר לימודיו לא הצליח לקבל משרת מורה של גימנסיה בלבוב, אלא בברודי, שם פעל עד 1896׳ שאז יצא ללייפציג להשתלם שם במכון למדעי בלשנות.
בר 1902 נתמנה כמרצה באוניברסיטת לבוב. כל ימי חייו נשאר מלומד צנוע הפורש מן הציבור ושקוע בעבודתו המדעית בלבד. בלאט לא התכחש למוצאו היהודי ולשם עבודת־ההשוואה שלו עסק גם ביסודות השפה העברית.Connected nodes
