... הקופצים נפלו בידי הבולשת. רק בודדים הצליחו
להמלט על נפשם, להשיג אוכל ולבוש כלשהו מידי
האכרים שרחמו ם — ולא רבים היו בעלי־רחמים בין
האכרים — ויכלו לשוב ללביב. ה״קופצים" ("די
שפרינגערס") היו לשם־דבר בציבור היהודי. היו
ביניהם מומחים מנוסים׳ שהספיקו לקפוץ כבר שלוש
או ארבע פעמים, והצביעו עליהם כעל "אנשי מופת".
בדרך כלל, כל מי שעברה עליו פרשת הקפיצה, לא היה
עוד אדם מן הישוב. קשה היה ל״קופצים" להסתדר
בחיים ה״בורמליים" של הגיטו. לא היו בידם אישורי־
עבודה, לא היה להם מקום מגורים, לא בגדים ולא
כל רכוש פרטי שהוא. והיו רובם חונים על אולם
