בבית־הכנסת היו נוכחים "האלופים ראשי מנהיגי הקהלה, כי כן צוו עליהם שרי הגובערני בעונש של המשים רייניש על כל אחד אשר לא יבוא לשמוע דרשת רבנו הגאון ומה השכילו לבקש מבעלי הפקודות שידרוש אחר קריאת התורה, בחשבם כי אז ילך העם איש לאהלו. אולם שגו ברואה, כי בקשתם זאת נהפכה להם לרועץ ומעשה שטן מצליח — כי אחר קריאת התורה התאספו כל העם מקטון ועד גדול יחד עשיר ואביון מכל בתי הכנסת המון רב כהמון חוגג, עד כי איש את אחיו דחקו ויהי כי צר להם בית־דכנסת וגם אולם הבית הקטן מהכיל את ההמונים ההמינים אשר נהרו שמה, עלו על הגג והשקיפו בעד החלונות לראות הדרת פני כבוד רבנו הגאון ולשמוע אמרי
