הננו יושבים כך שעתיים. לבסוף, באחת עשרה
בא מפקד המחנה ה״אונטרשטורמפיהרר" ולהויז. ראינו
אותי לעתים קרובות בעיר, כי הגיטו הרשמי עוד לא
היה קיים אז. פחדו מפניו פחד מות. שחום, נמוך־
קומה, בעל גוף מוצק ומצח שקוע. הוא עומד במרחק
כמה מטרים מאתנו ומקבל רפורט מאנשי ה־ס.ס. הוא
משוחח אתם ומצטחק. דומה לאדם נורמלי ואלגנטי
בעל לב ונשמה. אולם בגשתו אלינו קבלו פניו * הבעה
של חיה רעה. בעיניו השקועות עמוק בחוריהן הודלקו
נצוצות אכזריים, ועל שפתיו התחיל מרחף חיוך
