... ב־30 ביוני 1941 נכנסו הגדודים הראשונים של
הצבא הנאצי ללבוב. למחרת פרעו האוקראינים פרעות
ביהודים. ידידיו של ד״ר לוין ביקשוהו להסתתר
מפני הסכנה, אך הוא גמר בנפשו לפנות אל המטרו־
פוליט שפטיצקי ולבקשו כי ישפיע על האוקראינים
לחדול מן הטבח. ד״ר לוין ערך נאום אל המטרופוליט,
שתורגם על־ידי בנו יצחק לאוקראינית, לבש את
בגדי־הכהונה ואת הכפפות השחורות שהיה שם על
ידיו רק בהלוית־מת והלך אל ארמון המטרופוליט.
הלה ביקש ממנו שישאר בארמונו עד יעבור זעם.
הרב ד״ר לו*ין השיב לו: .,שליחותי נסתיימה. באתי
לבקש על הכלל, ואני שב אל הקהל אשר בו מקומי,
