ולאחר שהניגודים ביניהם הלכו ופחתו , אסרו החסידים
והרבנים יחדיו מלחמה נגד ההשכלה , בראותם בה
תנועה המתנקשת בנפש האומה להכחידה מן העילם .
ההשכלה והחסידות לא יכלו לדור בכפיפה אחת ,
אעפ״י שהמשכילים העברים שאפו ל״חיבור החכמה
עם האמונה" . החסידות דבקה באהבת ישראל ובחבה
לציון וירושלים וינקה את כוחותיה ממקורות הקבלה ,
בעוד שההשכלה תבעה גישה מדעית־בקרתית אל
העולם ומלואו . לבוב היתה אחת הערים שמלחמת
החסידות וההשכלה הגיעה בה עד חרמה משני
הצדדים , הקנאה הדתית גברה במחנה החסידים , והקרב
