... ביוני 1842 הוגשה בקשה לשלטונות להרשות בניית
בית־תפילה מודרני לפי דוגמת בתי־הכנסת בוינה
ובפראג, שיסופח אליו בית־ספר לנוער היהודי. השל־
טונות דרשו מן המבקשים לנמק את הצורך בבית־
תפילה כזה ולהודיע על המקורות למימון בנייתו
ולסיפוק האמצעים לקיומו. המיסדים השיבו, שבתי־
הכנסיות הישנים אינם נותנים סיפוק לאינטליגנציה,
מפני שמתפללים שם בקול רם, אין בהם מטיף והוראת־
מוסר, לא שליח־־ציבור ולא מקהלה, שתנעים את
התפילה, כדי שהנוער יתייחד עם אלהיו. והיות שבכל
בתי־הכנסיות בלבוב נמכרו המקומות לצמיתות, אין
