Liberation and the few survivors

The Red Army liberated Skala at the end of March 1944, but the memorial book emphasizes that only a few Jews survived. Survivors’ accounts, including Shalom Grinberg’s testimony, became essential records of families and events that had been destroyed. Justice and unresolved memory

After liberation, Nazi perpetrators of crimes against Skala residents were arrested and tried, while later proceedings concerning perpetrators remained part of the community’s remembered history. The book also preserves accounts of Soviet authorities receiving alleged Ukrainian and Polish Jewish murderers. Rebuilding communal ties

Survivors and emigrants created committees, raised relief funds, supported a clinic in Netanya in Skala’s name, and maintained annual Yizkor gatherings in New York. These efforts turned shared loss into continuing communal responsibility. The Yizkor book as memorial work

At a New York Yizkor gathering in November 1960, participants approved preparing a Skala memorial book, and the initiative began in 1961 after years of effort in America and Israel. The 1978 book therefore preserves not only wartime testimony but also the survivors’ determination to restore Skala’s people, places, and public life to memory.
