How did people survive, resist, and help one another?
Read survivor accounts of flight, hiding, underground bunkers, escape routes, mutual aid, and armed resistance. By the end, you will see survival as a series of dangerous choices made by individuals and groups, not as a single outcome.
What forms did survival and resistance take?
Aid and escape routes
Skala Jews provided food, clothing, medical care, and transport assistance to deportees passing through the town. Three young survivors later reached Skala and obtained documents to cross into Hungary, showing how local help could create a route to safety. Hiding with families and in bunkers
Individuals and families hid in fields, beneath a synagogue, and in forest bunkers; one account describes a woman sheltering in a field with her child while her husband sought refuge. During the winter, six named men built new underground shelters deep in the forest, but bunkers could be discovered and liquidated. Flight into the forests
In June 1943, a group fled the ruins of Skala toward the forest, while other survivors escaped from ghettos or hid after Aktionen. The memorial book records both the determination to flee and the lethal conditions that continued in hiding, including deaths in the forest. Partisan resistance
The Ashendorf Youth Band was founded in the Borshchiv ghetto and operated in Tsiganer Forest; the book identifies it as a Jewish partisan unit. Its activity continued until December 1945, placing armed Jewish resistance within the broader story of Skala’s survivors.
