אחד הדיירים הקבועים בקיטון קטן שבבנין היה טיפוס
מוזר, קצת תמהוני ושמו הירש "קעצעלע"(חתלתול). ברנש צנום
היה, דק־גו, גון פרצופו כהה, ופניו מוארכים; זקנקנו הדליל
והמחודד על קצה. סנטרו היה שחור כזפת, עיניו השקועות
בחוריהן היו כאוכמניות, מהורהרות תכופות ומפיקות זיקוקין..
בודד היה האיש. תחביבו, או שגעונו, היה לספר על פגישותיו
בלילות האפלים עם מתים עטויי־תכריכים ועטופי טליתות
הבאים להתפלל בחצות הלילה. יתירה מזו: הירש "קעצעלע" עמד
על כך שהוא נתקל בלילות גם בשדים ורוחות ומדבר עמם כדבר
איש לרעהו, ולא עוד, השדים הללו חובשים שטריימלים מזנבות
שחורים בדיוק כמו השטריימל שלו, שהוא נוהג לחבוש על ראשו.
