How did tradition and modern Jewish politics coexist?
This path examines rabbis, religious learning, Zionism, Mizrachi, and youth activism without reducing Sokółka to a single ideology. Readers will see a community in which religious authority and political experimentation operated alongside one another.
How did Sokółka’s Jews debate Jewish identity, responsibility, and the future?
Rabbis and religious authority
Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Director served as Sokółka’s rabbi from 1883 to 1900, and the book also remembers Rabbi Israel Goldin’s study, service, sermons, and later rabbinic career. Their biographies show religious leadership as an important part of the community’s public and intellectual life.

Zionism becomes organized
In 1898, about three hundred community members from different factions formed an association supporting Jewish agricultural workers in Palestine, while Sokółka Zionists participated in a regional conference in 1900. The book therefore presents Zionism as organized communal work rather than only an abstract idea.

Religious Zionism and youth movements
A Mizrachi branch was established in Sokółka in 1902, and the religious movement’s conferences included Sokółka-linked participation. Later, Young Zion and HeHalutz organized local youth and pioneering activity, showing that religious commitment, Zionism, and generational activism could overlap.

Political variety within the community
The memorial book names Mizrachi, Young Zion, Hashomer Hatzair, Freiheit, and a religious workers’ party among the movements associated with Sokółka. Their presence indicates a community where Jewish political life included religious, labor, socialist, and pioneering directions.
