השלטון הרוסי היה רקוב מיסודו. במקום להתכונן למלחמה נגד אויביהם מבחוץ, היה נתון במאבק פנימי והרסני, ולא מעט נתן את דעתו לטפח אנטישמיות ושנאה ליהודים, וחפש תחבולות איך למרר יותר את חייהם. הרוסים מצאו עצמם בלתי מוכנים לקרב. הגרמנים הכו בהם בכל החזית. והנסיגה של הצבא הרוסי מגבולות המדינה החלה.
החזית התקרבה לעירנו, סוקולקה הפכה למחנה צבאי גדול; כל העיר היתה מלאה צבא רוסי, בכל הבתים והחצרות שוכנו חיילים. הרחובות שוקקו צבא, כל בתי-הספר של היהודים והתלמוד-תורה, בתי-הכנסת, הוחרמו עבור הצבא. כנסיות ובתי-ספר פולנים נוצרים לא הוחרמו. הקוזאקים הפראים הטילו פחד על יהודי סוקולקה, הכריחום לפתוח את החנויות בשבת, תפסו את הצעירים לעבודות שונות ומשונות, ומררו את חיי היהודים בלי הרף. ...Connected nodes
