... הגרמנים התבססו, התבצרו והנהיגו בסוקולקה משטר
חמור בחיים הכלכליים והתרבותיים. את רוב המזון מן
הכפרים העבירו לגרמניה ואצלנו, כמו בכל שטח הכבוש,
הנהיגו כרטיסי־מזון לכל התושבים. היינו נאלצים לעמוד
בתורים ארוכים לקבל קמח ללחם ותפוחי־אדמה קפואים,
שר׳ שמואל כהאן ז״ל חלק בשם ועד־הקהילה. התחלנו
להרגיש ברעב. מקצת הילדים התפזרו לכפרים הקרובים
ובחסות החשיכה הצליחו להחדיר מצרכי מזון הביתה.
