... אנשי סוקולקה מצבם ודרך חייהם לא היתר. סוגה
בשושנים. רובם השתייכו למעמד הבינוני, חנוונים,
בעלי־מלאכה, מקצתם סתם פועלים הולכי־בטל. החנו-
יות והמסעדות היו כמעט ריקות מקונים כל ימי השבוע,
פרט לחנויות מכולת ואטליזים, בהם מצויים הקונים
בתדירות. אנשים קנו בדים, חליפות נעלים וכובעים —
רק לחגים היהודיים. הפדיון מן האוכלוסיה היהודית, דל
היה. לכן צפו יהודי סוקולקה בכליון־עינים ליום השוק
הקבוע, שהתקיים מדי שבוע ביום שני, כי עיקר פרנסתם
היתר. מצויה מן האכרים, תושבי הכפרים, מסביב.
