בעברך גשר־העץ אשר על פני הנהר הקטן, הולך
ומתפתל הרחוב הראשי, רחוב ביליסטוק, הרחוב בו
נולדתי, כה נחרט בזכרוני: ארוך, רצוף אבנים ובשני
עבריו מדרכות. הבתים, הרבה בתים ואחד אינו דומה
למשנהו. פה בתי־עץ, מכוסים רעפי־עץ ושם בתי־לבנים
ורעפי מלט גגותיהם, פה בתים מטוייחים וגגותיהם
מצופי־פח, במקצתם עדיין מסתתר גג מכוסה אלומות־
קש בתום בני־קומה, בני־קומותיים, זקופים ישרים,
מצוחצחים וביניהם בתים שחוחים, מטים לנפול ואיזוב
משתרג ומכסה קירותיהם. הצד־השוה שבהם, בכולם
שוקקו חיים יהודיים. יהודים טובים ופשוטי־עם, עמלו
בזיעת אפם, חלמו ולחמו מלחמת קיומם. פה נרקמה
אגדת היהודי הנצחי, חושל רצון התקומה והותזו
