... לפתע, ב־22.6.41 הכריזה גרמניה מלחמה על רוסיה
ולמחר שחל בשבת בבוקר השכם התפרצו הגרמנים לתוך
העיר. את ביקורם הראשון ערכו בבית־המדרש החדש
שבו ישבו יהודים ולמדו והם גרשו אותם בגדופים ובאיו-
מים: "האם התאספתם להתפלל על מפלתנו יהודים נב-
זים—בקרוב נשמידכם". ואמנם למחרת, ביום א׳ הת-
חילו לחלל את ספרי התורה שהיו בבית המדרש. רק
מבית-החסידים הקרליני הצליחו היד,ודים, בסכנת נפשות,
לד,ציל 2 ספרי תורד,. כעבור ימים מספר הזמינו הגר-
מנים כמה מבעלי-הבתים ופקדו עליהם להכין רשימה
מלאד, של כל התושבים היד,ודיים בעיר. הפקודד, נתמל-
אה. נתנד, הפקודד, ליהודים לעזוב תוך שבוע אחד את
