... והנה ניפנף פתאום לעיני זהבם של שלטי גלבים עם שלוש
צלחות נחושת־קל התלויות במוט ומקשקשות באויר. ונכנסתי לשם.
שלוש מראות מקובעות במסגרות של זהב כיסו את הכותל מצד
שמאל, ולפני באמצעית ישב בן־אדם מצומצם במושבו והיה מעיין
בספר. עם כניסתי קם בקפיצה, הניח ספרו הפתוח ועמד לפני
וביקשני לשבת בכורסתו. היה הגלב־החובש ("רופא" קראו לו)
יהודי בינוני, דק וכחוש בגופו ושקוע לחי חזהו, ושבור קול דיבורו,
ופורחות לחייו באודם משונה, והוא כוחח וממצמץ בעיניו האסורות
בשעה שהוא מוציא דיבור מפי. בקצה סנטרו תלוי לו זקן צהבהב
שאינו מגיע אלא למחצית הלחי, ומסופר הוא כהלכה ובקפדנות
