בן 17 נשא אשה, נעשה סוחר, הפסיד כספו וחזר לעסק
הנגינה. נסע לצ׳אנסטחוב לחזן אברהם־בר בירנבוים שפתח בית
ספר לחזנות, הראשון והיחידי בכל פולין, למד אצלו וסיגל לעצמו
את יסודי המוסיקה והחזנות. אחר זה כיהן בחזנות בסטובניץ,
קראשניק, קוטנו, שידלובצה, ומשם עבר לבנדין. היה זה עוד
לפני מלחמת העולם הראשונה. שירמן היה החזן המאומן הראשון,
שהיה בעל השכלה מוסיקלית, ואחיו הצעיר ממנו פנחס, היה עוזר
לו כמשורר במקהלתו. מבנדין עבר לוארשה ששם כיהן כחזן בבית
